Community

One of the aims of the Air Training Corps is to promote citizenship and community involvement. 497 Squadron has close ties to the community in Daventry its surrounding areas. The Squadron is especially proud to have been honoured with the freedom of Daventry and Squadron members regularly take part in or support civic and other types of  local events, galas and shows, wherever possible. One of our Cadets is currently serving as  a Lord Mayor’s Cadet and a Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet is selected from Air Cadet Squadrons in the area, every year.

Being one of relatively few local Squadrons with its own Band and Music Section, 497 regularly has opportunities to attend concerts and partake in a variety of musical events. Our cadets are often selected for and have the honour to sound the ‘Last the Post’ at Remembrance events and can take part in marching band activities, usually in conjunction with other squadrons from within the Wing.

497 squadron has many close links to various ex-service organisations and often assists with fund raising for them, as well as taking part in key events such as Battle of Britain Sunday and Remembrance Day and various other memorial and parades, which occur throughout the year.

Our Community work also involves a healthy interest in a surprisingly large number of aviation and military related organisations in the region. Staff and Cadets have supported the RAF Cosford Airshow and regularly visit local museums, activity centres, industries and related functions and events.

We seek to engage at a number of levels as community consists of many layers, both local and national so whether it involves providing first aid training with Saint John’s Ambulance or communicating with Radio Amateurs in distant places on the Amateur radio bands, we are there. Our active participation in the Duke Of Edinburgh’s Award scheme, is also a key interface with a wide range of voluntary and charitable groups.

Although, we always endeavour to put a lot into the community; we remember that we also receive a lot of benefits in return from it; sometimes in terms of support for our fundraising activities but also in the context of giving our cadets and staff opportunities for participation, incredible experiences and a sense of  belonging and value, for which we are all grateful.
